A unique opportunity has emerged to join Te Tumu Paeroa at a critical time as they build and grow their communications function. We’re seeking a strategic communications expert with an understanding of Te Ao Māori and a passion for capability-building, team leadership and working within an organisation working with and for Maori.

So that the foundations of ancestral lands may be solid, benefitting Māori from our past, present, and future alike. This is Te Tumu Paeroa-guardian, supporter, and advocate for the mana of Māori land everywhere.
As kaitiaki of whenua Māori under the administration of the Māori Trustee, we provide services that support owners and trustees in protecting and enhancing their whenua for generations to come.
He angitūtanga | About the role
This is a broad and impactful Communications Manager role, reporting to the Pou Arahi Rangatōpu | Corporate Services Director. You will be responsible for shaping and enhancing the communications function, ensuring it aligns with the organisation’s vision and objectives.
In this role you will get to:
- Build and lead a small, high-performing communications team – take an active role in the recruitment, team and culture development.
- Develop and refine existing overarching communications and marketing strategies and shape future strategies to align with our business priorities.
- Enhance the role internal and external communications by proactively engaging with the wider organisation, identifying opportunities.
- Collecting, analysing, and interpreting data to support reporting and continuous improvement.
- Driving formal stakeholder engagement planning to strengthen key relationships critical to their mission.
- Supporting major organisational change, particularly within IT/digital transformation-leveraging communications to facilitate engagement and adoption.
This role offers significant opportunities to shape how communications can empower and uplift both internal teams and the people the organisation serves.
He kōrero mōu | What we’re looking for:
We are seeking a strategic, hands-on leader who brings:
- Senior-level experience in communications and stakeholder engagement.
- Proven success in developing and executing communication strategies.
- Strong leadership skills-while prior management experience is ideal, we also welcome applications from those with team leadership experience ready to step up.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the confidence to advise at the executive level.
- Strong relationship management skills, with the ability to identify, engage, and influence key stakeholders.
- A proactive, inquisitive mindset, with a genuine passion for communications and how it can drive positive impact.
Specific to Māori competency, we will be looking for evidence of:
Ngā Pae Mōhiotanga Reo Māori
- Pae Toru – Te Mau me Te Whakahoki: An understanding of Te Reo Māori, with the ability to engage in conversation.
Ngā Pae Mōhiotanga Tikanga Māori
- Pae Toru – Te Aro Wairua: A deep understanding and embodiment of Tikanga Māori at an Ao Wairua level, including knowledge and practice of karanga, whaikōrero, whakapapa, karakia tahito, and mōteatea.
Existing networks, or knowledge of networks within Māori would be an advantage.
