We’re seeking a technical data expert to join the investigation services team as a Data Recovery Specialist.

This is a specialist role and one that will expose you to an incredibly interesting environment as you work across the investigation team to provide and assist in interpretation of recovered data to the air, marine, and rail investigations.

In this role you’ll be involved at various stages throughout accident investigations, which could involve providing assistance at the accident site either remotely or via deployment, locating and securing the data sources at site or from relevant agencies, maintaining the integrity of that data, and its later extraction and analysis.

You’ll provide detailed technical data analysis to assist the investigation process, reconstruct accidents using 2D/3D technology, and be able to present your findings and the complexities in a clear and concise manner.

The role will involve some travel and overnight stays when deployed to an accident site.

About the organisation

The Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) investigates significant transport accidents across the three modes of aviation, rail, and marine, with a view to avoiding similar occurrences in the future. Multi-disciplinary teams investigate and analyse the circumstances of these occurrences, supporting the Commission to consider the facts, and make findings and recommendations to improve transport safety, rather than to ascribe blame.

Skilled investigators, led by an Investigator in Charge, attend accident sites, often in remote locations, to gather evidence for each particular investigation within these three modes.

The investigation process leads to a report outlining the findings and safety recommendations for consideration by the Commission.

The Commission has set a visionary goal of “No Repeat Accidents – Ever!”

Skills and experience

You’ll have a tertiary qualification in mechatronic or electronic engineering, or software development and programming qualifications.

Other skills and experience we’d like to see in your CV include a sound knowledge of:

  • mechatronics/microelectronics/electronics/avionics
  • data recovery, audio and video analysis
  • computer engineering, automation systems and machine learning/AI
  • GIS
  • Python, VBA or other high level programming languages.

You’ll be a tech-curious person who keeps up to date with emerging technology and techniques and have a high level of IT literacy and understanding of PC architecture.

Given this role is working with and contributing to the work of others, you’ll need to have:

  • very good communication skills – written and oral
  • strong attention to detail
  • great time management
  • the ability to work within legislative and organisational frameworks
  • a good sense of integrity and professional ethics.

Your work supports the accident investigations across the aviation, marine, and rail sectors and you could be deployed to accident sites for data recovery, so will also need to meet medical and fitness requirements, as well as having high levels of diplomacy and professionalism.

In return you can develop a career as a highly specialised transport sector forensic data recovery expert, contributing vital expertise to significant transport accidents. You’ll receive ongoing career development in a supportive and development focused organisation – one that is internationally regarded and clearly focused on the avoidance of repeat accidents.
