Job Title: Defence Delivery Portfolio Manager

Location: Sydney or Newcastle
Salary Range: $220-230K (inclusive of super)

Role Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Defence Delivery Portfolio Manager to lead and manage a portfolio of projects aligned to business strategy and objectives. This role involves strategic thinking, working closely with business stakeholders, and ensuring the successful delivery of a range of projects. The position requires operational excellence in managing a portfolio of Defence-focused projects, mentoring project managers, and overseeing governance and risk management. You will be a key player in translating business-driven technology roadmaps into actionable projects, all while managing resource allocation, funding, and interdependencies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Portfolio Management:
    Lead a portfolio of 10-20 Defence-related projects, ensuring governance, risk management, and project assurance. Projects vary in size from $250K to $8M.

  • Mentorship and Guidance:
    Support and guide project managers (up to 5) to ensure compliance with project frameworks and provide coaching to ensure projects adhere to scope, budget, and schedule.

  • Business Relationships:
    Actively nurture relationships with business stakeholders to understand their needs and translate these into project initiatives. Work with strategy and architecture teams to define technology capabilities needed for future projects.

  • Strategic Planning:
    Drive future planning of projects, including prioritization, alignment with business strategy, and resource management. Contribute to the creation of portfolio governance, overseeing decisions on resource challenges, risks, and issues.

  • Project Estimation and Resource Planning:
    Lead project estimation efforts, considering resource needs, hardware/software requirements, cost implications, and risk assessments. Oversee resource planning and address any resource gaps in collaboration with the Digital Portfolio Delivery team.

  • Governance and Risk Management:
    Provide assurance and support across the portfolio, ensuring governance adherence, risk management, and timely status reporting.

  • Financial Oversight:
    Oversee budget management, ensuring alignment with financial goals and reporting requirements. Work to resolve funding and resourcing challenges.

Experience and Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years of Portfolio Management experience in large-scale ICT environments, managing business analysts and project managers to deliver complex projects aligned to business objectives.

  • Extensive senior ICT management experience, including managing diverse project portfolios in infrastructure, software, application development, and new system implementations.

  • Strong leadership capabilities, with proven experience in resource planning, managing a matrixed delivery model, and overseeing project estimation.

  • In-depth knowledge of ICT industry trends, standards, and ways of working, with the ability to translate business strategy into technology projects and initiatives.

  • Commercially savvy with a track record of managing budgets, delivering senior-level reporting, and providing strategic insights to stakeholders.

  • Senior stakeholder management experience and the ability to communicate effectively with senior executives.

  • Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities, with a focus on making informed decisions and providing actionable recommendations.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience presenting to senior executives and managing stakeholder expectations.

  • Collaborative mindset, with the ability to work effectively with peers and guide project managers in a matrix environment.

  • Resilient and motivated, with a track record of managing complex projects in virtual, matrixed teams.

  • Solid financial project management literacy, with the ability to manage project budgets, report on financial status, and navigate resource constraints.

Additional Information:

  • The successful applicant will need to hold or be eligible for NV1 security clearance. As such, applicants must be Australian citizens and not from ITAR-restricted countries.
